MORE INFORMATION

THE LOCATION7/10

The B&B is in a corner end terrace in the northern Clifton district and no attractions are nearby. York Minster and the centre are a 20-to-25-minute walk. If you choose to walk to the city centre, you'll pass through Gillygate with its collection of quirky, independent shops and eateries.

By car: 50 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 40 minutes from Manchester and around 4 hours from London. Free on-site parking available.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours, after which, the hotel is 15 minutes by taxi. Book trains to York.

CHARACTER & STYLE8/10

The solid exterior of this large, Victorian terrace house gives no clue to its bold and stylish interiors. There's a low-key touch of bling in the richly themed bedrooms - and so it suits people who want a touch of luxury but in a more intimate setting than a hotel.

THE FACILITIES8/10

It may be a B&B but the service is slicker than many hotels: a smartphone app lets you check in, control your room's heating, order breakfast and check the weather; while a free shuttle takes you to and from the city centre. Owners Tony and Diana are friendly, knowledgeable and really want guests to enjoy their stay.

ROOMS9/10

All the eight rooms have been carefully themed but without losing comfort. The Versailles (room 1) and Rococo (room 3), for example, have extravagantly carved beds and mirrors; the oriental (rooms 2, 6, 7 and 8) rooms have exotic-patterned walls and fabrics; while the four-poster rooms (4 and 5) are classic country-house.

Room types: Room 1-8

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, tea and coffee-making faciltiies, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD & DRINK8/10

Breakfasts need to be ordered the night before but you can do this on the app. There's a nicely laid out cold buffet while hot dishes - cooked by Diana and served by Tony - include eggs how you want, eggs Florentine as well as a grill 'stack' with a pork and apple patty, and Monterey cheese, amongst other items.

Breakfast: cooked fresh to order, locall sourced ingredients. Dishes include full English and eggs benedict, with cold buffet of yoghurt, cereals, muesli and fresh fruit. Served daily 8-10am.
