CHARACTER & STYLE8/10

Interiors have all the Hotel du Vin clubby hallmarks of polished-wood or tartan-carpeted floors, deep-hued colours and leather armchairs. Anyone with a love of wine - plus couples who want a smart base outside the tourist hustle - will enjoy staying here.

THE FACILITIES7/10

There's a cosy snug plus sofas in the bar if you simply want to chill. For warmer days, there's a small front terrace. Staff are bright and efficient.

ROOMS7/10

The majority of the 44 rooms are modern and unfussy. The ensuite bathrooms are sleek and luxurious - some with walk-through showers. We liked the Deluxe Room, in the main Georgian building - which had garden views.

Room types: Classic, Deluxe, Junior Suite, Suite, Signature Suite

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, desk, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD & DRINK8/10

The dinner menu is unashamedly French classic - think onion soup and chicken liver parfait, followed by moules frites and veal cheek bourguignon. Breakfast is to be lingered over with a tempting cold buffet, followed by cooked-to-order items.

Bistro du Vin: relaxed dining, classic French cuisine. All-day dining, open daily. Afternoon tea served Fri-Sun.
