MORE INFORMATION

THE LOCATION

You'll need your hire car's satnav when heading for Finca Arminda; it's just a ten-minute drive from the airport but there are no signposts. It's best to get round by car unless you're a seasoned biker or hiker. Villa de Mazo's weekend market, open 9am-2pm, has fresh fruit and veg, crafts and hand-rolled cigars.

Try local vintages at nearby family-run vineyard Bodega Carlos Fernández S L in neighbouring Breña Baja.

By plane: flights from London take around 9 hours with a stop in Barcelona; flights from Birmingham take around 11 hours with a stop in Tenerife. The hotel is a 1o-minute drive from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to La Palma.

CHARACTER & STYLE

There are examples of the eponymous Arminda's floral artwork throughout the finca, together with family relics. Religious artworks dominate the bedrooms, and Renaissance-style statues bask in the sunshine in the garden.

THE FACILITIES

If you speak Spanish, staff are happy to chat to you about the property's rich history; if you don't, you are rather left to your own devices. A small outdoor pool is ideal for cooling off after an invigorating trek along one of the trails in the area.

  • Garden
  • Swimming pool
  • Free parking
  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

There are six rooms and there's lots of wood throughout - in the doors, solid beds, ornate mirrors and heavy shutters. The original stone floor is still there, as is much of the furniture - a reminder of Finca Arminda's glorious past. Walls are thick which means the Wi-Fi is patchy.

Room types: Double Room, Triple Room, Family Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bath or shower, tea and coffee facilities, TV, desk

Food & Drink

Enjoy breakfast with a view on the patio. Finca Arminda is only bed and breakfast, but it's a desayuno that will set you up for the rest of the day: fruit-filled smoothies, generous platters of cheese, meat, and fruit, crusty bread and strong coffee.

Breakfast: continental spread of bread, meat, cheeses, fruit.
