The historic Alfama district is a maze of streets, and the hotel benefits from its hard-to-find location - you won't get passers-by dropping in. The views over the neighbouring rooftops and down to the Tagus River are mesmerising. Very close is the city's Romanesque cathedral, a little further are the shops of downtown Baixa.

From the outside, this establishment looks fairly modest but once you step inside, it opens up into unexpectedly large and airy interiors. Original features like vaulted ceilings and brick walls merge with bleached-wood floors, interiors in shades of coffee and white and large plate-glass windows. Designer lights and modern artwork provide the decoration.

Take an early-morning dip in the bijou rooftop pool - and return to ease your aching toes after a day out exploring.

White-shuttered windows let the light flood in, making rooms feel spacious. It's worth getting a room with a river view; terrace rooms have a small patio although it's not screened from view.
