Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz, Gozo

You're in a peaceful location just outside the small village of San Lawrenz. Everything is nearby on Gozo, an island measuring just 8.5 by 4.5 miles. The closest beach is a six-minute drive, and it's ten minutes to the capital, Victoria. A short walk away is the Ta'Dbiegi Crafts Village, where local artisans sell traditional products - it's great for souvenirs.

Dwejra Bay, with its dramatic coastal backdrop, is perfect for swimming.

By plane: flights to Malta from London take 3 hours 15 mins; flights from Manchester take 3 hours 35 mins. It's a 50-minute drive from the airport to Cirkewwa, from where the ferry crossing to Gozo takes 25 minutes. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Malta.

The hotel's impressive exterior suggests this establishment is older than it is - in fact it opened in 1999. The large number of rooms can make the place feel a bit like a labyrinth .

There's plenty to do here - there's a fitness centre, tennis court, spa (with an Ayurvedic centre), and choice of swimming pools.

Our room was a little plain and could have benefited from a design upgrade, however the balcony offered an attractive view over the outdoor pool and gardens.. The bathroom had both a bath and walk-in shower.

L'Ortolan serves Maltese and Mediterranean dishes, using local ingredients such as rabbit, octopus and aubergine. Trattoria San Lawrenz focuses on Italian and Il-Baldakkin Lounge has lighter dishes like soups, salads and sandwiches. There's a seasonal Grill - Gazebo - and a pool bar for snacks and drinks.

L'Ortolan: international and European-influenced flavours, buffet and à la carte breakfasts. Open daily for breakfast and Fri-Mon for dinner.
