THE LOCATION
The hotel is just outside the city walls, on the main road south to the racecourse. Most major attractions are within 10 to 20 minutes and there's a pleasant, meandering route into the city if you aren't in a hurry.
By car: the hotel is 40 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 30 minutes from Manchester and over 4 hours from London. Paid parking available nearby.
By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours, after which, the hotel is a 5 minute walk. Book trains to York.

CHARACTER & STYLE
As part of a still-working convent, with buildings dating back to the 18th century, it has a part-historical, part-institutional feel. You'll love it if you're looking for a friendly, no-frills, good-value base in the city with more guest-house than hostel atmosphere.

ROOMS
It may be a working convent but the 20 rooms are not monk-ish cells. Spread over three floors, they're simple but bright. Thoughtful touches include reading lights and fresh milk, and good storage and lighting in the bathrooms.

FOOD & DRINK
Breakfast, served in the café, is jolly and wholesome with homemade granola amongst the cold buffet and hot dishes cooked to order from your pick of items including local sausages and bacon. The Victorian 'winter garden' next to the café, with its glass canopy, bright tiled floor and big pots of ferns is great for people-watching.
The Cafè: tranquil seating in Victorian Atrium or winter garden. Homemade soups, sandwiches and daily specials. Open Monday-Saturday 8am-3:30pm.
