Sail through the heart of Europe

If you're new to river cruising, there's a reason why the Danube is often recommended as your first itinerary. There's no better way to immerse yourself in Europe's rich history and the scenic splendours that abound from its shores.

The Danube sails through 10 countries, and while most cruises focus on the upper and middle sections of the river, you can choose to cruise the lower section, which flows towards the Black Sea. A river cruise is a great way for ticking off new destinations and multiple countries in one trip, as you explore both cultural capitals and sensational smaller towns on itineraries, which adds to the charm of the Danube.

Often described as a romantic journey, here's five reasons why a Danube river cruise should feature highly on your bucket list.

1) Cultural immersion

Cruising the Danube is a cultural experience and the river connects several iconic European cities. On our artistic delights Danube cruise, you can tick off three capital cities in successive days: Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna. These destinations offer so much in the way of arts, history and culture. You could choose to visit imperial palaces, historic churches and cathedrals, or galleries and museums. When booking a river cruise, there will be plenty of opportunity to connect with communities and live like a local, with tailored shore excursions that immerse you in culture and traditions. Back on board your ship, you can also look forward to special events and performances which tie in with your cruise itinerary - such as local musicians playing classical music.

2) Musical links

The river may have been forever immortalised in Johann Strauss' waltz The Blue Danube, but there are plenty of other musical links, which make a Danube river cruise so captivating. Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss all called Vienna home, and their former homes have all been transformed into museums, dedicated to their lives and works. On our Blue Danube cruise, you also have the opportunity to spend the day in Salzburg - made famous by the iconic film The Sound of Music. Although 2025 marked the 60th anniversary of the film, there's no better reason to explore its rolling hills, the Mirabell Gardens and Schloss Hellbrunn. Budapest is another city which holds significant musical importance.

3) Charming towns

As well as visiting iconic cities, the beauty of cruising the Danube, is calling at lesser known villages and towns that can be reached by smaller, boutique-style river ships. You'll dock in the heart of these destinations, giving you maximum time in port. From the romantic town of Dürnstein with its ruined castle and famous blue abbey, and Melk (also in Austria) to picturesque Esztergom, one of Hungary's oldest towns. Regensburg in Germany is a beautifully-preserved medieval city, with a UNESCO-listed Old Town which is well worth visiting. Hidden gems along the banks of the Danube offer a blend of outdoors adventures, historical and cultural sights, and the opportunity to sample traditional cuisine. But more on that next.

4) Delicious food and wine

Cruising the Danube through the Wachau Valley takes you to one of Austria's best-known wine-producing areas, famous for white wines such as Reisling and Gruner Veltliner. Calling at Dürnstein, Melk or Krems are all a great opportunity to see the terraced vineyards which run along the flat riverbanks and up the steep hillsides. Visit the wineries and sample some of these delicious wines. While on board, your ship will offer dining experiences, highlighting regional specialties, there's nothing like stepping ashore to foodie hotspots to sample local cuisine. Lose yourself at delicious food markets, and delve into delis to sample the diverse gastronomy of the region - from schnitzels to strudels, and dumplings to stews.

5) Stunning scenery and views

When embarking on a river cruise, you're blessed with beautiful views, as you sail through forested hills, picturesque villages and dramatic gorges. You'll find that the ship's accommodation is on the outside, offering a chance to spot scenic views from your bedroom window (or balcony), or head to the top deck - the sun deck - for the best vantage point. As you sail the Danube, you'll notice a real variety in the landscapes, and each of the stops offers a new perspective. Be sure to take in the panorama of the river and its surrounding areas when you are ashore. It's the river's beauty and charm that make it such a relaxing and romantic experience.
