Join historian Guy Walters on a tour of London, learning its connections with Hitler leading up to the war

Allow World War II expert Guy Walters to take you back to the London of the 1930s and 1940s to explore Hitler's and the Nazi Party's connections with Britain's capital. Over two days, you'll visit key sites, hear about influential and sinister individuals and get an insight into some of Hitler's plans should he have invaded Great Britain.

The first day focuses on the role of Nazi agents and spies. You'll visit Bayswater and Paddington, where many Nazi agents were based, rallies were held, and swastikas were flown - all under the secret observation of the Metropolitan Police and MI5. Guy will lift the lid on the intriguing story of American spy Tyler Kent before the group travels to the former site of the German Embassy, hearing the role of Nazi diplomats in London and their connections with the British aristocracy and the British fascist movement. A visit to the Tower of London is the day's final stop, where there's more to learn about Hitler's spies before you see the rifle range where the firing squad shot the last Nazi spy in 1941.

A special three-course dinner at German Gymnasium allows for lively group discussions about Hitler's London in the luxuriously reimagined surroundings of the original German gymnasium. Built in 1865, it was funded by London's German community, and it hosted London's first Olympian Games in 1866.

The focus on the second day switches to imagining what London may have been like had Hitler conquered the UK. The day begins at what would have been the headquarters of the Holocaust in Britain before travelling on to Buckingham Palace to hear Hitler's plot to kidnap the Royal Family. Then it's on to Trafalgar Square to listen to the plans to plunder the National Gallery's riches and to ship Nelson's Column to Berlin. The tour concludes near Downing Street, where you'll hear bone-chilling plans of how Britain would have been run from Whitehall under the Nazi jackboot.

Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Nazi spies in London
    London, United Kingdom

You'll meet your group, tour manager and expert guide Guy Walters at Tothill Street, near Westminster Abbey. You'll board a coach to the Bayswater and Paddington areas - the heart of the Nazi Party's presence in London.

You'll look at the houses and flats where Nazi agents operated and the venue where the Nazis held rallies while they were spied on by the Metropolitan Police and MI5.

In the afternoon, you'll hear about the Tyler Kent Affair and visit the site of the Russian Tea Rooms on Harrington Road, South Kensington. Today, it's a beauty salon, so you'll head to a pub or café where Guy Walters will reveal the whole story.

Next, you'll visit the former site of the Germany Embassy at 9 Carlton House Terrace, now the Royal Society's home. You'll learn about Nazi diplomats in London, such as von Ribbentrop, and their connections with the British aristocracy and the British fascist movement.

You'll travel by coach to the Tower of London to hear how after the outbreak of war, Hitler sent spies to Britain - most of whom were rounded up, turned, or executed. The last person to be executed at the Tower was Nazi spy Josef Jakobs, and you'll see the chair and the rifle range where a firing squad shot him in 1941.

Next, you'll check into the Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington, and after some time to settle in, your coach will take you to German Gymnasium, a glamorous restaurant in Kings Cross. A special three-course dinner features delicious German specialities such as schnitzel and strudel under the expertise of German-born Executive Chef Bjoern Wassmuth.

  2. Day
    2
    Hitler’s plans for London
    London, United Kingdom

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll examine what London would have looked like had Hitler successfully conquered Britain. You'll start the day at 32 Porchester Terrace, now a private home, which would have been the headquarters of the Holocaust in Britain, likely to have been run by the evil Dr Franz Six of the SS.

Next, you'll head to Buckingham Palace to see the outside and hear the Nazi plot to kidnap the Royal Family and how the Duke of Windsor might have been re-installed by the Nazis as King.

In the afternoon, you'll continue to Trafalgar Square to learn how Hitler would have plundered riches from places like the National Gallery, and planned to ship Nelson's Column to Berlin.

The tour concludes in Downing Street and Whitehall to discuss how the Nazis and how a puppet dictator such as Sir Samuel Hoare would have run Britain before returning to the original departure point in Tothill Street.
