Day1Hardwick HallHardwick Hall, United Kingdom
After being met by a coach at your pickup point, your first visit of the trip will be to Hardwick Hall.
Designed by Robert Smythson, Hardwick Hall dominates the surrounding countryside in this peaceful part of Derbyshire. It is remarkable for being almost unchanged since it was first inhabited in the late 16th century, giving a rare insight into the formality of courtly life of the Elizabethan age.
You´ll see outstanding collections of 16th-century tapestries, embroidery, furniture and portraits inside the house. Outside, walled courtyards enclose fine gardens, orchards and a herb garden, and the surrounding country park contains rare breeds of cattle and sheep.
After your visit, you´ll check in at your hotel, the Ringwood Hall Hotel and Spa, where dinner will be served in the restaurant.
Day2RHS Harlow CarrRHS Garden Harlow Carr, United Kingdom
After breakfast at the hotel, you´ll begin your day with a trip to RHS Harlow Carr. The Royal Horticultural Society's northern flagship garden in Harrogate is a real showcase of gardening excellence.
Within this handsome and well-wooded site, there are sections devoted to groups of plants, including a rose garden, a bulb garden and an arboretum, along with three different kinds of rockeries. You´ll also enjoy displays of new cultivars in the trial gardens, which vary according to the season.
After your visit, you´ll have some free time to enjoy Harrogate. Attractions in this historic spa town include the Mercer Art Gallery, the Royal Pump Room Museum and of course Betty's Tearoom, a Harrogate institution, serving delicious afternoon teas.
Day3Easton Walled Garden with Arthur ParkinsonEaston, United Kingdom
Today, following breakfast, you'll travel to Easton Walled Garden in Lincolnshire, where you´ll be welcomed by Lady Cholmeley, the garden´s owner and where Arthur Parkinson will join your group. Lady Cholmeley will give a short talk and tour of the garden, after which there'll be time to wander through the gardens with Arthur.
This site of the Easton Walled Gardens is at least 400 years old, but was left abandoned in 1951 when Easton Hall was pulled down. Now, these 12 acres of once-forgotten gardens have undergone extensive renovation and can be enjoyed once more. You´ll see Italianate terraces and a yew tunnel, a cut flower garden, David Austin roses, meadows and sweet pea collections along with cottage and vegetable gardens.
After your visit, you´ll transfer to the nearby Cholmeley Arms for lunch, where Arthur will give an insightful talk and host a Q&A session.
Day4Haddon HallBakewell, United Kingdom
This morning you'll check out of your hotel and travel to Haddon Hall, a romantic and historic house set in hilly wooded countryside, for your last visit of the trip.
The castle at Haddon Hall was built between the 12th and 17th centuries, with turrets, crenellations and tracery windows and has often been used as a film location.
You´ll enjoy a guided tour of the gardens, which retain some of their 17th-century character, particularly on the upper level with its fine knot garden. You'll wander through a series of terraced gardens leading down towards the river, with a pond and fountain, an immense collection of roses and fine herbaceous borders, all set against the ancient stone walls of the castle.
After your visit, you´ll be dropped off at your pickup point as your memorable four-day tour draws to a close.
