The hotel is in a peaceful spot, overlooking the Tyne Valley. Hexham is the nearest town and a ten-minute drive away. Within 15 minutes, you'll find pretty Corbridge, Housesteads Fort and the excellent Roman site of Vindolanda.

The hotel sits on the line of Hadrian's Wall, set back from the Military Road which runs between Newcastle and the Cumbrian border.

By car: around 2 hours 30 minutes from York, 3 hours from Manchester and 6 hours from London. Free on-site parking available.

By train: trains from Manchester to Hexham take 3 hours 30 minutes and from London King's Cross take 4 hours - after which, it's a 10-minute taxi to the hotel. Book trains to Hexham.

On the whole, the feel is very traditional country house - think pelmet curtains, gilt-framed mirrors and candelabras. However, deep velvet sofas and splashy wallpapers give it a contemporary touch - the bar is smart and contemporary, and the dining room is rather glitzy.

Staff are courteous and professional. Facilities include a lounge, terrace, gym, swimming pool, tennis court and spa - allowing you to be as active or relaxed as you like.
