Located between a vast expanse of sandy beach and a nature reserve and at the gateway to magnificent Holkham Hall, this 20-bedroom 19th-century inn is an ideal base for exploring the landscapes, history and coastal highlights of Norfolk. Owned by the Earl of Leicester, The Victoria Inn sources much of its produce from his Holkham Hall estate and the result is a superb menu that brings diners from far and wide. The hotel itself is pet friendly and offers a relaxed charm that carries through to the elegant, individually-designed ensuite rooms.

The contemporary rooms make for a fantastic retreat for couples looking for a romantic break but everyone from nature lovers, cyclists, families and dog owners are more than welcome here.

A friendly team of young, local staff provides efficient service with a laid-back vibe. Between 10pm and 7am, there are no on-site staff, as this is more a hostelry than a hotel. Guests can enjoy ample parking and a small play area for children.

Open to hotel guests and non-residents alike, there are four open-plan dining areas including a spacious conservatory which has views over the Holkham National Nature Reserve, as well as a cosy bar. Outside spaces include a charming sun-trap courtyard at the back and a beer garden. We loved the cut of the day based on local beef, lamb or venison raised on the estate.

The Victoria: conservatory dining room, seasonal menus, meat from their farm, game from the estate in winter, homegrown produce, Norfolk seafood. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £15.75.
