The hotel feels remote as it's on a narrow road, a couple of miles west of Rothbury in mid-Northumberland. Only a handful of farms surround it, offering gorgeous views of the Cheviot Hills to the north, and the Simonside Hills behind the farm.

It's only a 10-minute drive from the A697 through the county.

By car: around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sunderland, 2 hours 30 minutes from Edinburgh and 4 hours from Manchester. Free parking available.

By train: Newcastle to Alnmouth takes 25 minutes; Edinburgh takes an hour; London takes 3 hours 45 minutes - after which, it's a 40-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Alnmouth.

Built in the 18th-century, the stone farmhouse has thick walls, low ceilings and deep-set windows built to withstand the northern winters. Inside the main house, furniture is solid and traditional, while in the barn conversion it's more contemporary.

Owner Ann greets guests with tea and homemade cake and is happy to offer recommendations in the local area. Wet gear can be dried, bikes stored, fishing arranged and there are maps to borrow. The main house living area has an oil-fired range while the lighter lounge in the barn has a wood-fired stove. The courtyard garden is pretty.

Food & Drink

As it's a B&B, only breakfast is served - but what a meal. Dine in the conservatory overlooking the Coquet valley and Cheviot Hills, where a cold choice is followed by cooked-to-order options that include eggs however you like, local kippers or a full English. Linger over breakfast while gazing out on the stunning countryside.
